Mutual Aid and The Network of Solidarity by Released Prisoner.
Mutual aid is an alternative organisational model to capitalism; it is not a charity or a means to build dependency on state institutions. Mutual aid is voluntary collaborative exchange of resources and services for common benefit amongst communities to meet social, economic, and political needs. Mutual-aid groups are horizontally organised and open to all to participate in. They are militantly anti-hierarchical and anti-bureaucratic with members in full control of the organisation and its resources. They are egalitarian, with decision making based on the principles of direct-democracy with responsibility for actions delegated.
In the capitalist present with the resources of the world resources in the hands of capitalist elites, those resources needed but denied to mutual aid groups can rightfully be expropriated.
The Prisoner Solidarity Network is such a network committed to dismantling the criminal justice system and building a society based on collective care. They want to build a society where conflicts are resolved without the imposition of state violence, imprisonment and punishment, where our relationships with each other are not shaped by capitalism and we are no longer divided by race, class, or gender.
The incarceral state is a brutal institution of the capitalist class system. It is the capitalist class system that churns out victims of its hierarchical, autocratic and exploitative system and then further brutalises them by blaming and imprisoning them. Governments across this continent use the default position of state power; coercive violence, to imprison children and young victims of the class system it defends, rather than diverting them away from criminal activity. The overthrow of the capitalist class system and its sibling state is the only means to end our oppression, in this instance by the incarceral state.
